The universe. To scientists it’s a puzzle waiting to be discovered. The immensely vast Big Bang Theory is believed to be how the universe was created. Therefore, it is thought that the energy from the big bang was so gigantic that the universe is presently expanding. Three of many causes that are resulting in the universe to expand include the jaw dropping dark energy and dark matter, Victor Hess’s discoveries on his voyages, and Fritz Zwicky’s and Vera Rubin’s discoveries. Fritz Zwicky and Vera Rubin were astronomers that both made discoveries associated with each other’s discoveries. Fritz Zwicky discovered dark matter, and supernovas. Supernovas play a part in the expanding universe. This is because supernovas brightness is observed by scientists to find their redshift. By doing so scientists can find how quickly the universe is expanding. To confirm this as stated in the “Dark Universe” article it says “Supernovas explode, and scientists observe the red shift.” Dark matter is the non-visible matter in space that makes up the majority of the universe. Scientists know dark matter is there because of its gravity effect on other objects such as galaxies. In relation to Zwicky’s discoveries other fellow colleagues told Zwicky his information was false, and that he was not in his right state of mind. Nevertheless, forty years later astronomer, Vera Rubin proved Fritz Zwicky correct. In the workbook, it says “She discovered that the matter that astronomers can see makes up as little as ten percent of the mass in galaxies. The rest exists in the form of dark matter.” Before Vera Rubin came to the conclusion that dark matter was causing this unheard-of issue she studied sixty galaxies. While studying, them she noticed that all sixty galaxies, stars were going at a remarkably fast rate. She asked for the judgement of her colleagues and soon found that the gravity of an unknown force was causing the stars in the galaxies to move quicker.
