Big Five Personality Traits Analysis

According to Jason Rentfrow, Ph.D., the “Big 5” personality traits are: extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and Openness to Experience (Rentfrow, 2009). To determine my own personality traits, I took a version of the International Personality Item Pool test located at psychcentral.com, I found my scores of these five traits to be: extraversion 27, agreeableness 36, conscientiousness 33, neuroticism 24, and openness 33 (Goldberg et al., 2006). While the test did not indicate exactly what each raw number means, they did break down that I was average in extraversion, conscientiousness, and neuroticism, and above average in agreeableness and openness to experience.

Openness is “to be receptive to new information, ideas, and experiences … available to what is new and fresh, unblocked by the filters of past conditioning” (Oestreich, 2005). In a time of globalization and increased competition in every industry, streamlining operations for optimal efficiency is a goal of any successful organization. Leaders need to be open to receiving input from customers, competitors, employees, and any number of areas in order to find the next great way to improve. An example of not being open to new ideas falls to the professor of a Yale University undergraduate named Frederick Smith. In 1965, he took into consideration the logistical requirements of the medical and electronic components industries and “proposed a system specifically designed to accommodate time-sensitive shipments”; Smith’s professor gave him an average grade because he “didn’t see the revolutionary implications of his thesis” (About FedEx, n.d.)
