Bitter Bierce
Ambrose Bierce was born on June 24, 1842, on a settlement of horse cave creek, Ohio. He was the tenth out of thirteen siblings. In the following paragraphs it will explain why Ambrose Bierce became a bitter man, and was call bitter Bierce and how it all went into his writings. The first paragraph will explain how his life made him bitter and the second paragraph will talk about how his work being showing bitterness. Bierce left home when he was 15 to be a printers apprentice at the northern Indianan newspaper. Bierce also attended the Kentucky military institute. One of his most famous and well known short stories is “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” which was published in (1891). That book was about a guy name Peyton Farquhar, who is hung trying to help the south in attempting to destroy a bridge. The story is compared to the cruelly and more violent in comparison to the other civil war stories. His first short story “The Hunted Valley” in (1871). He also wrote another story “Chickamauga”, it was about a deaf mute child that wanders through the woods and came about a terrible sight of seeing first hand wounded soldiers after a battle. The gruesome sight terrified the child so he ran home to only find that his house burned and his mother violently murdered by soldiers. .His stories merge everyday activities with the supernatural and paranormal events to better explain the human experience the way he sees it. Unlike most writers of his time, Bierce did not write stories with cheerful ideas and happy endings, instead he was a pessimist and he wrote essays, fiction, and commentaries that would remain in the reader’s minds and impact their lives in a different way. He did not write stories with mysteries either. Bierce took his writings and pushed them against the limits. Most of Bierce work consisted of people dying pertaining to war of the world.
