Biddy Mason's Life In The 19th Century

In the 19th century, the money system was different compared to what it is today. $15,000 in the 21st century would be considered equivalent to $280,000 in the 1800s. Biddy Mason was very active after she gained her freedom. She bought a “site on Spring Street for $250 becoming one of the first black women to own land in Los Angeles” which started a steep incline to her success (from slavery to entrepreneur, Biddy Mason). She was known for her clever decisions such as selling $1,500 of her land and renting the remainder of it.
