In the beginning
“In the beginning,” the famous first words of the most sold book in the world. The purpose of this literature review is not to enforce any of the beliefs on how the universe and it 's inhabitants came to be, but merely provide the evidence that both sides have used in order to defend the beliefs of each side.
Creation Creationism, the perspective that the universe and all it 's inhabitants were created out of nothing by God (Triune God), or at least by an intelligent designer (ID). There are three approaches to creation, biblical creationism, scientific creationism, and scientific biblical creationism. The first of the four creationist beliefs is Strict (“young-Earth”) creationism. This form of creationism fits perfectly in the biblical creationism approach, because they believe in the literal purport of the book of Genesis, in that the universe and everything in it was created roughly six thousand years ago in six days. Along with that, they believe that the great (Noachian) flood killed all the inhabitants of the earth, other than those on the ark (Fitch 40-41). Strict “young-Earth” creationism is the only creationist belief that is in the biblical creationism approach. The second creationist belief, which was popular in the early nineteenth century, is “old-Earth” creationism. “Old-Earth” creationist affirm that the Earth is very old, and that the use of “day” in the Bible actually identifies an age or geological epoch instead of a 24-hour period of time (Bailey 5). Because of the mixture of both science and religion, “old-Earth” creationism would be a scientific biblical approach. The next creationist belief is Theism. A theist believes that God is there to hear our prayers, and intervene to serve His ends, and nothing more. A theist is not concerned if the literal translation of the book of Genesis contradicts evolution, because they treat the Bible more as a moral compass instead of actual facts. This idea of evolution simply states that over many generations of a species, they will undergo some sort of genetic change. This change can be over time can range from something very subtle to a massive change, thus creating something quite different from the original species. All species will not evolve at the same rate, because the rate of change depends on the evolutionary pressures they experience (Coyne 3-4). The next part of the evolutionary theory is gradualism. Similar to the first concept of evolution, gradualism suggests that it takes many generations of change to produce a substantial evolutionary change. This gradual change doesn 't usually happen over a few generations, but mostly over hundred, thousands, or even millions of generations. Speciation and common ancestry, the third and fourth parts of evolution, help explain the vast amount of species we find living on Earth today, and where they came from. Since there are several fundamental traits that we share with many, if not all living things, this tells us that every species goes back to a single common ancestor. This common ancestor is commonly referred to as the “missing link”, because it is the genealogical connection between species. In a very simplified explanation, back during the time of this common ancestor, there was an evolutionary change within the species that overtime prevented interbreeding, so we now have two
