Biblical Allusions In The Scarlet Letter

In The Scarlet Letter biblical allusions, are used, to contrast how Hawthorne’s characters view sin. First, in Chapter VI the reader can pick out the first biblical allusion. “But she named the infant “Pearl,” as being of great price, purchased with all she had, -her mother’s only treasure” (Hawthorne 61). Pearl seems to see the letter on her mother's chest as a metaphorical lack of sunshine on her mother's life. She thinks it's a part of her mother, so she wants Hester to put it back on. Hester has worn this letter A on her chest to stand for the crime she committed and once in the beginning she's ashamed to wear it because who wants to wear something around all the time to let people know you've committed adultery?…

Pearl as a symbol In the novel the scarlet letter by nathaniel hawthorne, hester’s daughter, pearl is used very interestingly as a symbol, and is the one to point out puritan flaws, and flaws in her parents, Arthur dimmesdale and Hester Prynne as their illegitimate child. Her questions shock everyone around her, and she is described as a little girl with curly hair and pointed ears. The very significance and the symbolism in her character is a balance of nature versus society, sin versus human nature and how guilt balances itself out.…

In his iconic novel, The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne masterfully uses detailed symbolism to portray a multilayered story on sin and its consequences in the days of the Puritans. There are many examples of symbolism throughout the novel but one that Hawthorne seems to refer to the most is the symbol of Pearl, Hester’s daughter. Pearl represents Hester’s sin, the price she must pay for redemption, and the scarlet letter itself. The first time Pearl is officially introduced in the novel she is a symbol of the adultery that her mother committed. Hawthorne writes, “But she named the infant ‘Pearl,’ as being of great price, – purchased with all she had, – her mother’s only treasure” (61).…

As she would run alongside her mother, she often ran carelessly, “with many a harmless trip and tumble.” These words undoubtedly depict a view of a young girl in a very charming, juvenile way, even though lines before, she was purposely aggravating her mother. This attitude that the author has toward Pearl foreshadows what is to come of Pearl, her mother, and the infamous sin. He shows that though Pearl is devilish now, people of the town are beginning to see her as more of a tricky child than a manifestation of sin. Pearl is described as having a “rich and luxuriant beauty;..…

Pearl Prynne, The Angel of Sinners In The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s purpose of creating the character of Pearl is to show his opinion on sin and guilt. On multiple occasions, Pearl made it clear that Hester’s sin must be shown, such as when she was uncooperative with Hester after Hester had removed her scarlet letter. Also, Pearl did not care for Dimmesdale as he was hiding his sin, particularly when he is standing on the scaffolding at night and when she meets him in the forest.…
