Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, has become one of the most fascinating novels in history, although it was often hated and ridiculed when it was first published. Many people found the language ghastly and claimed the story was making farmers seem like they were the only ones affected by the Great Depression. Steinbeck interpreted many biblical references throughout this novel to help readers better understand and connect to the story. The Grapes of Wrath takes readers on a journey with a family of farmers who have lost everything due to the Great Depression and Dust Bowl. This novel uses many characters and events to connect to The Bible, such as Tom, Casey the flood, and several other things.

The farmers who lived in Oklahoma had to face desert like heat and dust storms for an extensive period of time. This could be considered similar to the israelites traveling through the desert for 40 days and 40 nights. Towards the end of the book the flooding of the train car is also a biblical reference. The novel starts off with the desert and hard times, but people migrate looking for a better life, and a flood ends it all. In the Bible the israelites are the Egyptian slaves, and migrate to the promise land, and also face a flood. God told Noah to bring his family and two of every animal on his ark, and sent a flood cleansing the land of all the bad people. The flood of the train car is much like Noah’s Ark, because the Joads have to abandon the train car and find shelter. After Rose of Sharon lost her baby she was heart broken and weak. The Joads had to flee the train car due to the rising water and sought shelter in an old abandoned barn. Rose of Sharon, still unable to walk, was laid don in the soft hay. Papa Joad and Mama Joad then met a young boy and his dying father. The boy explained that his father was starving and couldn't hold down solid food because he gave all the food to his son and his stomach was weak. Mama Joad then thought of a solution, she spoke to Rose of Sharon about it and she agreed to do it. Forgetting her pride Rose of Sharon went to the man and breast fed him, therefore; saving his life. Rose of Sharon can be compared to Mary, Jesus mother, because she becomes a mother-like figure and symbolises Mary and Jesus. She is also considered a version of Jesus much like Casey was, by giving life to the man like jesus gave the body and the blood to the people offering them
