Studying the historical-cultural setting in the Bible is necessary for proper interpretation. If one reads the Bible without taking into account the historical-cultural environment, the scripture can be taken out of context. When Scripture is taken out if context, it can be difficult for the audience to grasp the true meaning of the text. It should be examined to comprehend what was happening at the time and what the author was conveying to his audience. It also helps the reader understand the message that God initially wanted us to hear. Furthermore, it aids in helping us apply it to situations in our lives.

16:6) Jesus said, “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.” In this reference, it is clear that He is not talking about actual bread. The surrounding scriptures explain that He is talking about the false teachings of the religious leaders. We also see this again in the Book of Matthew where Jesus is rebuking the religious leaders. (Matt. 23 1-39). It is important to note that the Pharisees and religious leaders during that time were teaching false doctrines and not the Word of God. They were self-seeking men who were righteous in their own eyes. They were the religious leaders and the blind leading the blind. These leaders liked to look good in front of the people, but Jesus said, “They were full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.” (Matt: 23:28). They made up their own laws and enforced them on the people, but did not keep the laws themselves. The significance of this is that the people of God need to be aware that false doctrines existed then, as well as the present day. We need to make sure we know and understand the Word of God in its context to avoid being
