Bias In The Media Analysis

Have you ever been to see a celebrity up close? Have you ever been less than a hundred feet away from somebody everyone in the country knows? Have you ever waited in line for hours just to get in to see this person? Last year, I went to see Donald Trump when he came to talk in Fredericksburg, and it really changed my views on people and on the media. I believed that the media was only slightly bias, and that people were generally good people, but I was mistaken. I went to the Trump Rally when he came to Fredericksburg last year “for the lul”. I was trying to be edgy, but I learned a lot when I went. The media portrayed the event with obvious bias towards their party. While I was there, I observed a ton of relatively normal people. However, depending on what news you were watching, you would either think that only veterans and disabled individuals were there, or that only biker gangs were there. The Democratic news sources showed mainly the biker gang members on their news, while the Republican news sources showed mainly the veterans and disabled individuals that were there. It really opened my eyes to just how biased it could be. I believed that the news was biased, but I didn't really understand the full extent of just how biased it could be. …show more content…
While I was waiting in line, I interacted with entrepreneurs who saw an opportunity to make money, activists seeing the opportunity to get people to sign petitions (and then proceed to harass them when they didn’t want to), Democrats trying to persuade you to vote for Hillary Clinton, as well as attention seekers who would dress up in costumes and run along the line of people. People tend to take advantage of a celebrity's following and the group they bring. Men, women, and children were all subject to this kind of behavior. Age is irrelevant, as is social status. Everyone wants to use and abuse a celebrity’s following for their own

The largest, most dangerous riots took place in Ferguson, causing the city to become swamped by the National Guard and media. I personally witnessed a group of individuals who live streamed the event in Ferguson from their point of view. I found the stream through an internet website called Reddit, and over the course of my freshman fall midterms I continuously watched the group’s broadcasts. Expecting to see a different side of the people rather than the news media’s footage, but sadly did not see much of a difference between the two…

However, later we could see this event used to focus on certain issues, otherwise known as narrowcasting, allowing the media to push policy agenda towards issues supported by that cite. The article points out that President Trump steered away from narrowcasting his conservative view of immigration. However, by pointing out President Trumps affiliations with the National Rifle Association and his silence on political issues gives the article a liberal tone on the issue of gun control. Besides this, the article does a well job of staying unbiased on the topic on hand. All forms of media were on this story when it happened starting with broadcast media talking about it first, since it can spread information faster, and after the numbers were gathered the print media was able to start sending the detailed information.…

One example from the movie Selma, Martin Luther King went to a city where there wasn’t much new attention which did not incite the nation. Any media coverage that did come out was not truly depicting the brutality of the situation. Continuing with the example when MLK went into Selma there were plenty of reporters willing to depict the true story of what was going at the time of his march to Birmingham. This just goes to show how powerful news, and reporters are on depicting the nature of a march, or twisting it and making it a riot. This devalues their movement which causes hate against a group who actually did nothing wrong but were depicted as violent individuals on the TV.…
