Why is delegation an important function in the health care setting?
The importance of delegation in the healthcare setting has increased over the years due to the global shortage of qualified nurses and the ageing nursing population which has resulted in a growing dependency on non-qualified personnel, such as Medical Assistants (MAs), Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), and/or Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs) to provide certain aspects of patient care within the care setting. Nurses now carry out more highly technical care, sometimes taking on the work of junior doctors which has resulted in the delegation of the ‘lesser’ tasks to the MAs or CNAs (Gillen & Graffin, 2010). When used appropriately, delegation is a vital tool for the professional nurse and should ensure safe, competent nursing care. Just like managers in a corporation, nurses can delegate tasks but remain accountable for the final result. Tasks, such as bed-side care, intravenous catheter insertion, urethral catheter insertion and/or other typically physical tasks delegated and performed by an MA/CNA/LPN/LVN allows for the licensed nurse to focus on the more critical tasks such as overall patient health, floor management, subordinate management, medicine management, etc. MAs/CNAs/LPNs/LVNs are a
