In 1996, the Taliban took over Afghanistan and began to rule over the country with severity. This had a colossal impact socially on the Afghani people, as the Taliban made swift changes, which included implementing a multitude of harsh rules that had a specific correlation with their extremist interpretation of Islam. The rules that were introduced, included rules for women that prevented them from dealing with male shopkeepers, getting an education, as well as forcing them to wear a burqa, amongst others. Failure to abide by these rules would cause women to be abused verbally or physically.
