Beyond Scared Straight Analysis

Scared Into the Right Path Across the United States children have been sentenced as adults and been sent to adult prisons. Also many kids are sentenced to die in prison without the consideration of their age. There are programs and ways to help children who misbehave and put them on the right track. In these programs and sermons fear is the key to changing someone’s life for the better. Some may say that fear is not the best motivational force, but I believe that it is the best. Fear can make people so scared to do what’s wrong and force them to change their attitude. In the TV episode Beyond Scared Straight, it shows a program called “Change Within”. In the “Can Kids be Scared Straight”, the juvenile's actions make the teens realize they're on the wrong path and need to change. The prisoners talk one on one about their experiences and it shows the kids where they’re at for doing those things, and helps the kids realize it could happen to them also (Feinstein 28). Edward makes people change their ways by scaring them to live like Christ. For example Edwards states that, “Hell is gaping for [the bad people], the flames gather and flash about them (41). He is trying to scare them by explaining that the ones who don’t walk like Christ will be in internal damnation after they die here on Earth. Fear can make someone realize that his or her life is actually a blessing. Elijah from the Beyond Scared Straight program wanted to be a Marine but had to fix his life first (“Corcoran”). Elijah had to give up smoking weed to make his dream come true. Also in the Beyond Scared Straight program, Thomas isn’t misbehaving anymore and now mows people’s yard.
