One of Beyonce’s most talked about songs was her then-newly released single, “Formation”. Many may argue that this song as “anti-police”, however, Beyonce makes it clear in an in-depth ELLE magazine interview that anyone who perceives her message as so, “is completely mistaken”. Beyonce’s video is focused on police brutality and injustice; which is what she states to be, completely different from an anti-police issue. This song, Formation, reveals the Beyonce we were never introduced to. It touches base on her heritage, culture, family, and how she chooses to define herself. It is said that an emotional response is often an effect of a live performance. During the Super Bowl of 2016, Beyonce chose to perform the same song, “Formation”. Beyonce stunned the audience and was able to express the same message her music video does. It is safe to say, the Beyonce stole the show at her half-time performance. Beyonce chose to perform in Michael Jackson life attire with dances dressed in similar style. Beyonce’s performance stunned the audience and it is said to be the “most political performance to be performed at a half-time show” according to The Guardian article. I think this performance was appropriate because it was right around the time the Black Lives Matter Movement begun to rise. This song and music video has an ongoing theme of self-love for the African American community. It was a strong and bold performance that couldn’t emphasize black pride any more. While the music video made it easier to interpret the message of the song, her live performance gave the same message in my opinion. Though the main idea was to still send off the message, her performance at the super bowl was more energetic and upbeat being it was performed in front of millions of people. I think that even though the live performance was more for entertainment purposes, she was still able to convey the same message from inside and
