What comes to your mind when I say the word ‘feminist’? Be completely honest. Man hater? Hormonal crazed woman? Or maybe for some… hero? I’m not saying one answer is “right” and one answer is “wrong”, it’s just something to think about. Because there are in fact, different types of feminists. Some, on the extreme side of the spectrum, would like a complete matriarchy. Others, just want what feminists have been wanting from the time the term first originated: equality.
Feminism’s gotten a bad reputation lately. For many, even just the word itself conjures up images of radical ideology. Pop music star Taylor Swift has even recently asserted that while she is pro-equality, she won’t identify as a feminist. Others, such as Beyonce, are proud to …show more content…
I am seriously just confused. How on earth did some people miss the point of that so drastically?
But it’s not just women. Many men are joining the feminist cause, while others fight against it. Things often heard by male feminists are – “You’re a man. Isn’t that a contradiction?” or “Wait, are men allowed to be feminists?” or “Are you even a man at all?” And to that I say, at least as far as I am concerned, men should ignore all such comments. Because men are absolutely allowed to be feminists. Sexism doesn’t just hurt women, it affects humanity as a whole.
My personal feminism is a simple belief in equality. I’m a feminist because I believe that men and women are and should be equal, but we’re not treated equally right now. We see misogyny everywhere. We see it in a distorted conception of female beauty, we see it in dehumanizing portrayals of women in film and on television, and we see it when the response to rape all too often isn’t support, but consists of loud cries of “she was asking for it!” and “her skirt was really
