Beyoncé Knowles Flawless

I find that there are many times when I am being incongruent with who I should be and who I am. Beyoncé Knowles has a song titled Flawless and in it, the lyrics speak of the incongruency society has for woman by stating: “We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller. We say to girls, ‘you can have ambition, but not too much. You should aim to be successful, but not too successful, otherwise you will threaten man’ […] we raise girls to see each other as competitors, not for jobs or for accomplishments, but for the attention of men”. Women are perceived as bitches and should not be assertive is what I believe her song lyrics address a prominent phenomenon in our society. I identify with this struggle as well. Growing up, my grandmother taught me and her sisters to sit with my legs crossed and remain silent. As a child, adults taught to speak with spoken to and not to interrupt others. This did not mesh with my personality to speak up against injustices. As a part of the hashtag sorry not sorry campaign, I am constantly struggling with wanting to be assertive, but not appear as an improper woman. I worked as a campaign-organizing fellow, where I recruited and led a team to assist in grassroots campaigning. Those surrounding me called many names that equated to me being aggressive. I know how to lead a team and be …show more content…
Unfortunately, I do not enjoy cleaning and am not able to cook. Rather than focusing on wearing stockings and a skirt, I am quick to put on pants or wear a short pencil skirt without tights. It causes anxiety for me if I am speaking in church. It also makes me cautious of my connections with other

In the articles, “In Defense of Liz Lemon” by Emily Nussbaum and “The Fashion Industry: Free to Be an Individual” by Hannah Berry, both discuss how women can choose to step out of the typical stereotype on how women should be portrayed and be who they truly want to be. For centuries, there has been an unspoken code on how women should act, dress, and behave. However, through the years women have started to step out of those roles to embrace who they are truly are. Considering that women are becoming more powerful and successful than ever before, one would have to agree that women no longer stand in the shadows of men in the workplace or at home. Women are now becoming more comfortable in who they are by showing their personality and confidence in the way they act, dress and communicate to others.…

Beauty matters. Well, at least for some. From the clothes you choose to wear (and the ones you don’t) to the items you own, everything surrounding you changes how people perceive you, even things completely out of someone’s control. Pressures to adhere to societal norms can cause long-term harm for certain people, but others can take this concept in stride. Due to different upbringings, along with different environmental influences, it allows for a range of perspectives.…

In many countries, people treat women as if they are lesser than the men around them because of the stereotypes that are associated with each gender. The stereotype that women are supposed to be fragile, emotional and graceful makes them seem as if they are unable to perform certain tasks. The misconception gives men the idea that females are to stick with jobs that require minimum physical strength. Compared to the real world, the movie She’s…

“The only way for a woman, as for a man, to find herself, to know herself as a person, is by creative work of her own.” This thought-provoking quote is from Betty Friedan’s book, The Feminine Mystique, which was published 53 years ago. Now that we are in the twenty-first century, it is reasonable to presume that society has overcome gender barriers. However, slight traces of gender inequality still linger today. Just like race, skin color, and religion, gender should not pose an issue in any circumstance.…

“Never ever accept ‘Because you are a woman’ as a reason for doing or not doing anything”. To me, this quotation by author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie perfectly summarizes the Walk Tall talk by Jannette Taylor. This quote explains that though someone may be a woman, she can do anything she wants to do; she can do anything that is acceptable for a man to do. She continued by saying that life is too short to not be yourself; life is too short to not take; life is too short to not strive for what you want just because others may look down upon that. You get one short life so you should live your life the way you want and not let your race, gender, or naysayers get in the way of it.…

Every day I get guys that want to get my number wanting to chill and hang out because they either seen me in person or a picture of me. Out of the 7 guys that wanted to get my number 5 of them hit my phone up because they want more than a conversation. Being known as the girl from New York that is thick with no boyfriend guys have an assumption that I would like to mess with them. It’s sad that this society downgrades us females. The first false feminist assumption is in their crazy heads, they have concocted a fantasy land of oppression, where men are going out of their way to treat women like objects out of some sense of personal hatred or vendetta towards them or because they are scared of commitment.…

Promoting the idea of having to change who you are to be successful is a very negative message for women. In Beyoncé performances and lyrics on stage, she always makes a visual and speaks on how it's important to be an individual, your own independent person that is powerful. Although, if women were to be more prominent in the world, life, family and work priories will crash fiercely. As long as women are bearing the children in our species, women will not view child rearing and child care in the same way as men do, and will prioritize the responsibilities around it differently. Beyoncé sings in harmony about how women run the world, but why don't we actually run it, women are capable of so many astonishing accomplishments, but they're all hidden by the shadow of a man. Women deserve to be prominent in the world we now live if it’s what they desire for; it shouldn’t be that hard to treat women…

Each person has their own purpose and job they find fit for their lifestyle. The stereotypical culture needs a change. By becoming more accepting of those who are different and who do not want to follow society’s gender rules, society becomes more whole. Women and men should decide for themselves, instead of having culture or family members, such as parents, decide what their life will be and how they need to act. Whether they dream about becoming something not acceptable to their gender stereotype, or something that does fit the gender stereotype, they should reach to achieve their…
