Bexley High School Case Study

Tuesday November 21st was the Central District All-Star match which was held at Bexley High School this year. To compete in the All-Star match, the competitors must be invited. Those invited are often accomplished wrestlers who are highly ranked in their district. They wrestle one match against another talented wrestler from the central district. Every wrestler from a lower division school must wrestle a division one athlete. Each match is three periods with only one minute in each period. With such short periods wrestlers must work quickly to score. This year Jonathan Alder had two students compete, seniors Jacob Johnson and Dylan Boysel. Boysel competed in the 182 pound weight class against another wrestler from Dublin Scioto High School.

There is not a motivation to encourage them to take highly demanding courses, and since they are new in the system, they are unable to complain for something different. In addition, even if they complain, they are excluded from the option of taking a harder class because of the English level they can handle. The argument is unfair for those who excel in mathematical and scientific ability but lack of English proficiency.…

My first wrestling match was in a gigantic high school, it looked like the school had its own zip code. The high school was covered in red bricks; inside were narrow hallways, but the big classes made up for it. We made our way to the gym, with big bright mats that read “Chippewa Valley.” It's funny their school colors were red, but their singlet colors -the terrible fashion choice we wore to wrestle- were green.…

Our varsity wrestler for the weight class I was in was injured so I had to wrestle in the varsity match. Similar to all high school sports the wrestling team had a junior varsity team and a varsity team. Of course the varsity team is the better team and the team everyone wanted to be on, but it was not easy to get on it. To get on the varsity team from the junior varsity team, you had to challenge the person on varsity at the weight class you wanted. Challenging someone means you wrestle that person like if it was a real match. The winner got the varsity spot the loser went down to the junior varsity spot.…
