Beware of the Creek BY: DANIELLE OLIVIERI My grip on the rocks began to weaken and I felt myself slowly slipping closer into the creek. Those moments could have been my last. But luckily, I was able to make it of that situation. Why don’t we rewind the story a little bit to find out how this happened. Shall we? About four years ago when I was eight, my family and I were up in a small town near Lake Tahoe called Strawberry, for winter break. We wanted to go somewhere in the snow for the break. We had a nice cozy cabin bordering a creek with fast running water and sharp rocks. It was so pretty there in Strawberry. We had bought many sleds and snow tools to play with, and we were outside 24/7. The cold breeze on this particular day though …show more content…
My body heat was melting the ice below me. I continued to listen to the conversation around me which had changed subjects. I was not able to make out what it was they were talking about. I was more focused on the fact that I was slowly descending into the ground. I was terrified of falling in the creek. It looked harsh and frightening. The water was running quickly and constantly and the whole time is was like there was a water …show more content…
I fell straight through a hole in the ground. I fell head first and I have never been happier to have such fast reflexes because as soon as I began to fall, I put out my hands and arms trying to find somewhere to grip onto. I stopped when I reached the end if the whole that was leading into the creek and I caught myself on a few large rocks to both sides of me. The grip on my gloves was able to hold on to the rocks.I was hovering over the rocks upside down. I felt the blood rushing into my head and I was holding my grip on the rocks beside me. If these rocks had not been there, I could have possibly been dead. I was so scared at the time and I was in the moment of a near death experience. My brain was a treasure box full of fears. I was crying my eyes out. I was terrified. I was only 8 years old. Of course me being that age I thought I was going to die. I could hear the water beneath me weaving between all of the rocks. I then suddenly felt two pairs of hands grab my ankles and start to pull me up away from the creek. It was Lara and Alyssa. they made one last strong tug on my ankles and pulled me out and far away from the

Stars (Blank Verse) by Kyra Howard a vivid memory, it was midnight during the winter. white powdery snow on the ground, the night sky becomes so different in the country - its becomes like that father and farther away from the city. The stars in the city are like the city dwellers who they look down upon unwilling to come out during the night out of fear. the celestial delights of the night sky, everywhere, they surround us all the time but it's in the country, where if one looks up at the night sky the world becomes a planetarium - the specks of sparkling diamond dust that’s set up against the jet black backdrop of space, this crisp view.…

We have heard from other settlers that it's too wide to bridge so we have to use the sandbars to get across. That has been a stressful thought, hopefully no one has any troubles. So the next day i went out and it was raining I didn't really care that much as it would be easier to carve, I got out to one of the steepest hills in my neighborhood where you are going a solid 30-mph which you have to be to carve. Carving is when you’re going down a hill and just to add a little something extra you turn your board really quickly and your board is facing the side when you're going down a hill and you can only do this for a split second then spin your board back around. So i was about halfway down the hill and I instantly turned my board and turned it back i was still on my board no scratches on my body, no broken bones, and i was still alive. After learning this i knew i wanted to get really good at long boarding and compete with all…

In spite of this, my mind is focused on the skiers and snowboarders racing their way down and I feel a rush as I replay past trips down in my head. As our chair becomes even with the surface of the peak, I slide off and turn toward the trail I’d planned to take. Though it’s freezing cold, I barely notice under the abundance of layers I’m wearing. The sun hides behind a thin layer of clouds, illuminating the sky just enough to savor the view, but just enough overcast to give it an enchanted feel.…
