The past school, was strict, orderly, and militaristic, because they marched first grade children; this contrasts the present day school’s, laid back and lenient attitude towards its students. Moreover, this school differs from the present because of the class sizes, in Beverly Cleary’s class there was a student to teacher ratio of 40 to 1, and in today's school the ratio is 15:1. By having a larger student ratio the teacher cannot provide an excellent education for all of their students, which had a negative effect on Cleary since she had trouble learning and the teacher was too occupied by the rest of the students to help her. Furthermore, this quote is also important because it creatively reveals that Beverly Cleary does not truly understand how to behave in school because she was just mimicking the action of the other children and did not decide her actions
