This traumatic experience, coupled with the discrimination confronted by means of Indigenous people within the city, formed her perspective and instilled in her a fierce dedication to combating for justice. The reservation wherein her family resided, Soda Creek, supplied a sense of community amidst adversity. But, at the age of seven, she was sent to St. Joseph's Residential School, where she experienced emotional and physical abuse, leaving lasting scars that continue to affect her to these days.
