During times of war and when people have a risk of separation is in place, people will do anything to help or save those they love and care for. In the book Between Shades Of Gray, written by Ruta Sepetys, When times get rough because of Word War Two, Jonas and Elena are seen as very selfless people who help and affect many people's lives with helping others before themselves and make sure that what need to be done gets done. Which is something a child so young should never have to witness. But he still was determined to be selfless and helpful and prove to Lina and Elena that he's no little boy. The first act of his kindness and selflessness is when he had to think fast and get some water since it was so scarce people would die because of lack of water so getting water was a huge deal. “It was still raining when I got back,’ explained Jonas. ‘I dragged the pots outside so we could have water’’’ This shows that Jonas cares for everyone by thinking fast and getting everyone water instead of just himself. The second act of selflessness actually inspired Lina to be selfless to someone else when Jonas did something good Lina was inspired by him to also do something just as nice because she learns for him and respects that other people that are in need should get more than if you don't need it. “ I thought about my brother offering me his coat, and wondered if I should share my mittens with the bald man”. This shows that Jonas can inspire other to do good with what they have and have a nicer living and that he could've just gone ‘nope my coat it's all mine” but he decided to share with his sister because he saw her struggling. Even though Jonas was only a young boy when put on the train he quickly turned into a young man and learned that he needed to be a man, not a boy, by helping, being selfless
