Betty Neuman was born in Ohio in 1924. She earned a diploma as a Registered Nurse in 1947 from the Peoples Hospital School of Nursing in Akron, Ohio. In 1957, Neuman completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and in 1966, she earned her Master of Science in Mental Health, both from the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA). In 1985, Neuman received a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Pacific Western University. She was granted an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from the Neumann College in 1992, and in 1998, the Grand Valley State University in Michigan honored Neuman with an Honorary Doctorate of Science.
