My age generation has recently popularized the usage of a single adverbial clause to elucidate a situation. I received a Snapchat, a few weeks ago, from a high school friend with the text “When your roommate throws shade at Scranton.” Snapchat, an app that allows users to send and receive "self-destructing" captioned photos, has contributed to the popularity of this grammatical phenomenon. This structural convention exists primarily to humor. The sender’s facial expression in the picture replaces the absent main clause.…

Analyse how The Great Gatsby and Browning’s poetry imaginatively portray individuals who challenge the established values of their time. The Great Gatsby through narrative text style, and Barrett Browning’s poetry through Petrarchan sonnet form, both portray individuals who not only challenge accepted values of their time but may also adhere to certain values. Despite the immensely dissimilar contexts the texts are derived from, we are able to compare challenged or accepted values within them as the share particular themes such as love and gender roles. The novel, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, portrays the character of Gatsby who challenges accepted values of class and money, but adheres to value of courtly love, popular in his time.…

In the chapter Peeing in Jars with Boys (page 124) she discovers the male tradition of peeing in jars and leaving them strewn around the writer’s offices at SNL. She uses this example as a way to marginalize the difference between women and men comedy writers and comics. At one point, she questions if this was a test by the urinators; if you see the jar and ignore it, you are accepted. She dispels this theory saying “…they didn’t really give a fuck whether you came in the room or not” (Fey, 125) and that not all the men peed in jars; just a handful did. She then uses the peeing in jars theory as an argument for women in comedy.…

If you go on any news website, scattered among the articles about bombings in a middle eastern country, the next Facebook update, a new health scare, and a mass shooting, inevitably somewhere in the lineup will be a story about Kim Kardashian, Taylor Swift, Harry Styles or another rich 20something who may or may not possess talent. Yet America still seems to care about them. Why is this? Why do we idolize these people who we have never met, and why do we care that they just bought another home, or sold 10 million copies of their new book or CD? And why is it that when you ask a ten year old what they want to be when they grow up, a common answer is rich and famous?…

1.0 Aim Goldie Hawn is an American comedienne that was awarded an Oscar for ‘Best Actress in a Supporting Role’ for the film, Cactus Flower (1969), and was later nominated for ‘Best Actress in a Leading Role’ for the film, Private Benjamin (1980). Her blonde hair, ‘large, expensive, slightly scary eyes, and her wide, mobile mouth’ constructed the youthful ‘Goldie-ness’ persona which embodies girlishness, giggly, fun, comical, vulnerable, naiveté, and kookiness which modernised blonde-stereotypes in Hollywood cinema (Swinnen, 2000, p.95-101). This persona was first constructed during her appearances on Rowan Martin’s television series, Laugh-In (1968-1970), but it was only popularised in 1980 motion picture — Private Benjamin (1980). It is a known fact that a car loses half of its value the second you drive it off the lot, and it appears that in our society, views on women over the age of 40 are similar. In the Inside Amy Schumer skit, “Last F*ckable Day”, Amy explores how all women in Hollywood reach a day where they are no longer believable as sexy. Also explored is the change in treatment that they receive from that point onward. About female actresses in Hollywood, the sketch reaches beyond.…

“Feyminism:” A New Standard of Feminism for a Nonstandard World Move over, Madonna: feminism has a new poster girl, and her name is Tina Fey! In a time where feminism has been corrupted by the patriarchy into the work of “feminazis,” Fey’s Bossypants proves that feminism is still a rational struggle for equality. Throughout the text, Fey describes obstacles against femininity in her life; readers learn of her struggles grasping womanhood, the subtle sexism on the Chicago comedy circuit, and the struggles with her foray into television via Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock. Unlike most celebrity works, Bossypants is not one of overwhelming fame and glamour; between tales of celebrity mishaps, Fey intersperses her thoughts on standards of beauty, dieting, and the all-too-frequently asked question of having children. The key differences between Madonna’s feminism and Fey’s…
