Betsy Ross: A Brief Biography

Betsy Ross was born on January 1, 1752, in Philadelphia. She was the 8th of 17 children. Her great grandfather was a carpenter who had arrived in New Jersey in 1680. He had come from England. She attended Quaker schools and crafts like sewing regularly.

At the age of 17, Betsy met John Ross at a local upholstery that her father had assigned to her after completing school. They quickly fell in love. John Ross was an Anglican, and marrying outside one's religion was strictly off limits. Betsy and John Ross eloped November 1772. Sadly in 1776, John Ross was mortally wounded in an explosion while guarding an ammunition cache.
