Betsy Devos Pros And Cons

The recent presidential election wreaked havoc among the American people. The election of Donald Trump brought many changes to the American government and society. One of these changes was the election of Betsy DeVos as the Secretary of Education. Elizabeth Warren, senior United States Senator from Massachusetts, believes that DeVos is both unqualified and dangerous to be responsible for the country’s education policy and student loan program. Education affects many people in the United States. Access to free public education benefits people from all backgrounds, but is especially beneficial to low-income families. As it says in an article written by Emily Deruy titled “What Makes Betsy DeVos Such an Unusual Nominee for Education Secretary”, she states that DeVos has had far less experience than previous nominees. Her lack of educational and political experience is alarming to the public because she has the power to make or break the educational system in our nation. For example, if a doctor is not knowledgeable in their field than how can one expect or trust them to do their jobs correctly? This could have a large impact on the future for students and even teachers. In the article posted by Emily Deruy, she talks about DeVos’s lack of knowledge about public education. This is a very important aspect that she should know about, especially because she is the Secretary of Education. Knowing the basics of the field that one is going into is a key component in becoming a leader. Betsy DeVos lacks basic knowledge about the public education system which in turn, could have negative effects on the nation in the future. In DeVos’ confirmation hearing, Senator Elizabeth Warren questioned DeVos about her plans for the educational system and how she would protect students from fraudulent activities by for profit colleges. During this debate, Betsy DeVos was not able to answer these basic questions asked by Warren and repeatedly answered by saying she would “review” these rules. In another hearing with Senator Bernie Sanders, DeVos was again unable to answer the basic questions being asked. After asking DeVos whether or not public colleges should be free for all families in America, she responded vaguely to which Sanders retorted “that was not my question.” How can the American people count on her as a leader of something as important as the Secretary of Education if she is not able to answer these basic questions pertaining to the future of education?
