Betrayal In The Kite Runner

Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner displays a theme of betrayal and redemption. Throughout the story there are many showings of betrayal and the novel caps off with a forgiving tale of redemption. Amir betrayed his half brother Hassan on occasion, he remained tight lipped and undefensive of his brother when he was raped by Assef. Amir then lied about Hassan, and in the end, Amir saved Sohrab and gave him a life filled with opportunity and prosperity.

“A boy who won’t stand up for himself becomes a man who can’t stand up to anything.” These were the words of Baba to Rahim Khan speaking on Amir. Amir’s cowardice proved to be his biggest flaw in character. After the kite running competition that

He talks with Rahim and catches up on what’s been happening. Rahim tells him of the taliban’s raiding of Baba’s house and their public execution of Hassan. Hassan’s son Sohrab was sent to an orphanage. Rahim consults with him and Amir knows why he must go himself to get Sohrab. Rahim also reveals to Amir that Ali was incapable of having kids and this is when he learns that Hassan was his biological brother. When going to retrieve Sohrab, Amir learns that the official in charge of him is Assef. Assef tells Amir that in the case of Sohrab money's no object. He cuts a deal with Amir and says that if he leaves the room alive then he can have the boy. Assef puts on brass knuckles and was brutalizing Amir. Blurred vision swallowing blood and teeth is all the memory he has of the fight. Amir also remembers feeling relief he was laughing the entire time because he felt he deserved the beating as retribution for betrayal of his brother.
