Betrayal They say that the friends we trust are the ones that will betray us in the long run, in the short story “The Cask of Amontillado,” by Edgar Allan Poe is nearly a story of revenge of what's to really happen. The reader could say that the main characters are friends or at least somewhat acquaintances. In the story right away Poe creates this nefarious character named Montresor, where he is easily offended by the small things in life and even some that are made up. In the story betrayal and revenge are the two things that drive Montresors to a horrible chain of events that will stay with him for the rest of his life. Even Fortunato does not seem to believe because he says “Impossible… in the middle of the carnival,” as he too finds it hard to believe, but after all, he is intoxicated.
