Nevertheless Fortunato persists they carry on to the Amontillado. This act of “care” builds up Fortunato’s trust even more. When the two finally reach the final resting place for Fortunato, Montresor chains Fortunato to the wall, and builds a new wall up the hides Fortunato. When Julia was killed, the stepfather “reached [Julia’s] side [when] she was unconscious, and though he poured brandy down her throat and sent for medical aid from the village…” (Doyle). This builds up a sort of trust between the stepfather and Helen. Even though he caused the murder, he still acted all innocent and tried to help Julia. This is negated later when Holmes find out the stepfather was the one to try and kill both daughters to save some money. Betray is shown in The Adventure of the Speckled

At times, everyone felt betrayed by someone fairly close to us. In Edgar Allen Poe's, The Cask of Amontillado, Fortunato felt the ultimate betrayal by his supposed friend Montresor. Throughout the story Fortunato follows Montresor into the catacombs to try some supposedly weak Amontillado simply just to be tied to a wall and have a wall built around him. Fortunato makes himself an easy target by his arrogance, he's too trusting, and his ignorance of hurting Montresor. Fortunato's impairment ultimately betrays him in the end.…

In Fortunato’s mind, he must remain strongminded and physically strong so that Montresor will not think that he is weak. Again, this shows that he is willing to do anything to taste the wine. With pride taking over the mind of Fortunato, Montresor directs Fortunato to a crypt where he intends to lock Fortunato up and put him in the ground alive. Essay 1: “The Cask of Amontillado” “The Cask of Amontillado” written by Edgar Allan Poe, entails a plot of a very dark devastating revenge story. The reader gets a first person perspective from an unreliable narrator Montresor, who from the start of the short story is already plotting against Fortunato, because he feels he has been made a fool of by him. Montresor doesn’t let the reader know exactly what Fortunato does except the detail of saying, “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best I could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge (Poe, 165).” the reader gets a sense that Montresor is untrustworthy and has evil intent for Fortunato, but also could be fabricating the truth of events throughout the story due to…

Beyond the story’s dialogue, irony covers numerous portions of the story. The first thing that I found ironic in Poe’s story is its title, “The Cask of Amontillado”. When I first heard of this story, the word cask, which meant wine barrel sounded very similar to casket. After reading the story, “The Cask of Amontillado” was the perfect choice for the title because it leads to Fortunato’s final resting place. In addition, “the story's setting is ironic in that a carnival is a place for gaiety, happiness, and fun and games, not for cruel, cold blooded murder.”…
