Khaled captivating novel The Kite Runner uses the recurring themes of betrayal and redemption throughout his book. Khaled conveys the themes of redemption and betrayal by using conflict, symbolism, and characterization. The kite that has hassan catches becomes the symbol of amir's betrayal. As evidence by Yardley, Jonathan, “Amir remains loyal to Hassan until the day of the kite tournament, when he remains silent about the horror he witnesses rather than dispel his father’s praise for his glorious victory.” Amir refuses to tell his father that he stood pusillanimous at the sight of hassan being assaulted to receive praise from his father. In addition, the incident with the kite also causes Aimr to falsely accuse Hassan of stealing from Baba. For instance “Desperate to remove the source of pain, he plants some of his birthday cash under Hassan's mattress, then reports it missing to Baba.” The guilt of the kite incident causes Amir to continuously grow further and further apart from Hassan …show more content…
Baba betrays Ali by having an affair with his wife. In fact “Ashamed of his sexual relationship with Ali’s Hazara wife, Sanaubar.” Baba went behind his lifelong servants back and had a sexual relation with his wife which caused her to leave five days after her son was born. Furthermore, Baba has also betrayed his son Amir and his other biological son Hassan by not telling them that he was Hassan’s biological father. As evidence “Baba keeps secret Hassan’s true parentage, even after he and Amir have relocated in the United States.” He does this because he is embarrassed by letting himself fail at the sight of lust to easily and having had a child with someone of a lower caste. To be sure Baba had sexual relations with his childhood servants wife Ali which caused him embarrassment and led to him not telling Amir and Hassan robbing them of their heritage and robbing Ali of a Biological
