It is often hard to define someone as a great human being. Greatness can be defined itself as having the power to be brave, and never give up. Most people judge on the events that made that person great. Bethany Hamilton was one of those people who is defined as great. Bethany Hamilton is both brave, and dedicated. Bethany has never given up her dreams even after a shocking yet horrifying incident occurring only at the age of fifteen. Bethany’s story of courage can easily be categorized the same as both “The Myth of Sisyphus” by Albert Camus, and “I Think Continually of Those Who Were Truly Great” by Stephen Spender. Both pieces of literature connect to Bethany Hamilton because they are both about being brave, and fighting through suffrage, …show more content…
As a child, Bethany plunged into a great deal of surfboarding, she had immense love for the sport itself and the trill that came with it. Her relatives say that she has salt water in her veins and she was meant to surf. When she became a teen she began to compete in tournaments, and competitions throughout Hawaii. On October 31st 2003, a tragic incident happened. While surfing with her best friend and her dad at Tunnels Beach in Hawaii, at only the age of thirteen Bethany was attacked by a fourteen foot tiger shark. While brutally suffering the attack, the shark took her arm just below the shoulder. After the attack, Bethany began to lose a lot of blood, and became very faint. Although fighting for her life, she swam paddling with her remaining arm with a surfboard least tied around the wound to stop her from bleeding to death by her friends dad. After reaching to shore Bethany was rushed to the hospital taking the place of her father who was scheduled for knee surgery that day. After losing seventy percent of her blood, Bethany began to fight hard, and survived the attack. Ten weeks after the accident, Bethany went back out and began to relearn how to surf. The book also shows the love she has for god, and her encouragement to people to believe that god loves them, and will protect them. Bethany is an icon to many people throughout the world who either have had similar problems, or those who just admire Bethany for her braveness. Today, Bethany continues to surf, but also takes time to travel around the world as a motivational speaker to encourage people to conquer hardships and to follow their dreams. In 2011, a movie was released narrating the story of Bethany Hamilton also titled “Soul Surfer”. The movie became viral, and those who did not know about Bethany or her fight earlier began to know after seeing the movie. She has especially encouraged people who have survived shark attacks, and amputees. She has offered love and support to these people through the action of the nonprofit organization Friends of Bethany. The foundation also dedicates their work to sharing hope and love of Jesus Christ to the world, and to share Bethany’s personal story of her battle with the shark that sad day.
