Bethany Hamilton begun surfing at the young age of four, aspiring to one day become a professional surfer. Born and raised in a Christian family, she knew and accepted the Lord at only five years old. Later, her faith became an even bigger part of her- in many unthinkable ways. On October 31st 2003, Bethany was attacked by a fourteen foot shark during a casual morning swim with her best friend Alana Blanchard, her brother, and their father. While just relaxing and lying on her surf board with her arm dangling, the shark severed her left arm just below her shoulder. It was Bethany though, that seemed to help them through it. If she had not been able to climb out the abyss of the accident, if her life appeared to be ruined, it would be even more difficult for her family and friends to bear. However, with her bright attitude, she influenced them to think more positively as well; and therefore undoubtedly made it easier for them to cope too.
Bethany Hamilton not only advanced into professional competitive surfing, but was also successful in it. This would not have happened had Bethany not possess the qualities of resilience, positiveness, determination, and courage to continue doing what she loved despite the unthinkable circumstances.
Bethany Hamilton has been an inspiration to many, and I am one of them. Being a Christian, I can relate to Bethany keeping faith in the Lord. I want to be able to be as confident as she is in Him. Additionally, I am often pessimistic, stressed and annoyed at the smallest things; nothing compared to Bethany’s accident. If it was me in her shoes with my mindset, it could be possible that I would not be able to step up and continue aspiring to not only her surfing goals, but living her life in general. I want to learn from Bethany- seeing the light in darkness. Therefore, even if I am faced with an obstacle that trips me over, I want to be able to recover quickly, and be the resilient person Bethany is; whether with setbacks big or
