Every year, more and more people hear about the surfer who got attacked by a shark, and took her left arm off in 2003. She has not just touched people in our nation, but she has also touched people globally. The well-known surfer Bethany Hamilton is a role model for everyone who hears about her, overall inspiring, and trusts in God through all she does.
On October 31st, 2003, 13-year old Bethany Hamilton was out surfing with a couple of friends, when a 14-foot tiger shark bit off her left arm. After the attack, Bethany stated that: “I felt a lot of pressure and a couple of lightning fast tugs. Then I watched in shock as the water around me turned bright red. Somehow, I stayed calm. She also visits people in countries where disasters have happened, like when she visited Thailand in 2005 and brought orphans back to the ocean for the first time since the 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia. Then in 2011 she visited the victims of the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan. She has also won numerous awards and has been honored to be on numerous television programs and shows. Several awards that she has won were, 2nd place in the NSSA National Championships, in 2003, with only one arm, 2nd place at the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships, in 2009, in Sydney, Australia, “After one year after the attack, she won her first National title” ("Bethany Hamilton | Profile."), she also earned the New York Times #1 Best-Selling Author: Soul Surfer , and she has also received the Fox Teen Choice Award in 2004. From then until now, “Bethany has launched her own foundation, Friends of ("Bethany Hamilton | Profile."). She has also been a role model for people who have the same disability as her and, started her own group that has specifically been for girl amputees, like Bethany.
