Christopher Reeve once said, “A hero is an individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles” (brainyquote.com). Heroes are often classified as courageous and brave, someone who comes at the perfect time to save the day, often wearing a cape. Truthfully though, heroes are surrounding us. You do not have to be famous to be considered a hero; family and friends are often considered a hero to someone. Bethany Hamilton is a hero to many. She was born and raised on a surfboard and had dreams of going professional, and she was not going to let a single obstacle restrict her from achieving that goal. The first obstacle she had to face was learning to surf with one arm, and she overcame that just 26 days after the accident (bethanyhamilton.com). Bethany needed to enter the shark-infested water with no fear of being involved in another attack and just keep her mind set on her goal. Although Bethany had to overcome many obstacles in the water, there were also very many out of the water. With only one arm, she had to basically re-learn how to do everything for brushing her teeth and eating to getting dressed. Just everyday things would be a challenge for Bethany but would not stop her from accomplishing her goal. In July of 2003, just 5 months before her shark-attack, Bethany placed 2nd at NSSA National Championships (bethanyhamilton.com). Although she returned to surfing 26 days after the attack, she did not start competing that soon. In 2005, at the age of 15, Bethany won the United States national under-18 surf championship (bethanyhamilton.com). Bethany competed in many competitions throughout 2005 to now ranking many places in each one (bethanyhamilton.com). Just last year she was nominated for Nickelodeon Kids Choice Award “Favorite Comeback Athlete”, competed on CBS’s “The Amazing Race” season 25, and made an appearance in the new film “Dolphin Tale 2” (bethanyhamilton.com). Bethany is currently ranked 53rd on ASP Women’s World
