Bethan Cole Character Analysis

Improved Essays
With the abnormal behaviors of her parents, Bethany Cole’s thirteenth birthday approached and her parents left her with her aunt Myrlie, whom she has never known existed, in Sanderfield, Illinois. After her parents vanished, money and unexplained documents were sent. There, she soon recognized her life wasn’t typical, moreover, she was a clone of her unknown, deceased “sister”, Elizabeth Krull.

Bethany Cole is attentive of her surroundings, fierce, and sensible, since she discovered that she was a clone and didn’t turn expectedly hysterical through her dramatic situations. Myrlie Wilker is a sympathetic teacher that cared for Bethany and is beneficial to be dependent upon since she can manage things. Jocelyn Wilker is a minister but despite that, she is childish. Additionally, she knows how to aid others in need, like her mother.

‘There’s another name for it. We’ll have an exact copy. A clone.’ ’’ (Haddix, 126)
Without the realization of Bethany being Elizabeth’s clone, her identity wouldn’t have been exposed, and all the puzzle pieces wouldn’t have matched for her to recognize the explanation beyond her parents’ actions with her unknown “sister”. The text quoted,” I’ve never fainted before, but that’s what I do now”. Although she was distressed for a while, eventually Bethany was “set free by the truth”, otherwise she would’ve been left lingering oblivious. “Double Identity” certainly confused me with the clones and made me consider my identity. The theme of this story -the truth sets you free- forced me to think deeper of what made me and how, similar to how Bethany’s real identity relieved her. Stated by Bethany, “ I am not trying to understand why I lived when the other clones died. I am just me.” (Haddix, 216) I would absolutely recommend this novel to all readers, especially those who enjoy mystery, since this book contains all. Overall, “Double Identity” is truly compelling book, which made me rethink my

Chris McCandless’ actions can be seen as rebellious at first, but as time goes on, it is clear that there is hostility between his parents and himself that he does not want to face or try to fix. In a dysfunctional family, there are two extremes when it comes to the outcome of the children: the rebel or the conformist. Although the older child is typically the conformist and the younger child is the rebel, the McCandless family is a little different because both children are the rebels. Krakauer says, “Also like Chris, she clashed fiercely with Walt and Billie as an adolescent… [but] Carine made peace with her parents shortly after Chris disappeared” (129).…
