Amyloid plaques are believed to be one of the main causes behind the development of Alzheimer’s disease due to their destruction of neurons. Beta -amyloid proteins originate from a larger protein present in the outer membrane of neurons, and due to their adhesive properties, they have the tendency to conglomerate into plaques. Once the beta-amyloid protein reaches a high enough concentration within the plaques, they become toxic to the surrounding neurons, thus eventually causing neuron destruction. Neurofibrillary tangles also are considered to play a considerable role in this development due to their destruction of neuron
