Besty Devos Leadership Style Analysis

I particularly enjoyed the research involved in this assignment. I now have a good sense for not only the leadership style of both Besty DeVos and John King Jr., but also a better understanding of the responsibilities of the U.S Secretary of Education.

One of Betsy Devos’ speeches in August 2015 at the SXSWedu convention in Texas emphasizes her education vision on the issue of unequal education access in America. Her speech uses the propaganda technique of emotional appeal to convey messages about this social issue. In the speech, Betsy Devos uses a lot of emotional appealing phrases, such as calling traditional public education system a “dead end,” and labeling public schools as “low performing” schools (Strauss). She is denigrating the quality of traditional public schools, she thinks that traditional public schools are simply not as good as charters or privates. Besides, she also uses the propaganda technique of “glittering generalities”.…

As an adult I still play competitively and for the last 15 years have coached at the University and High School levels and I have found that truly investing in the success of others is a daily necessity. Teamwork is vital and having a collective objective is the basis for being a Transformational Leader; motivating subordinates using the common goal through, encouragement, support and respect to achieve the desired result is the ultimate target. Coaching is in general top- down and whether it is in athletics or business a transformational leadership style can be a “salient feature to attract and retain members who have similar characteristics in teams (Ehrhart & Klein, 2001; George, 1990; Schneider, 1987).…

She has ties to several education companies, including Social Finance, which started out as a student-loan refinancing company, as well as companies that sell textbooks and promote online education. The companies she’s invested in will be affected by the choices she makes as the head of the department, including decisions about which companies the government contracts with to handle student loans, and how it oversees different sectors, including online or virtual schooling. Democrats and advocacy groups have pushed for assurances that she will put reasonable distance between herself and those companies while she is secretary. Alexander, who prior to DeVos had perhaps the most contentious confirmation process in the history of the position, is familiar with similar issues, but on a much smaller scale.…

I do my best to not judge a political figure based on their party affiliation. My dislike of Betsy DeVos has nothing to do with her party preferences; it has everything to do with her political opinions and experiences. As someone raised by two public school teachers and educated on how our school systems work, this woman's policies make me nervous. I have yet to see any piece of information that could possibly change my mind.…
