BEST PRACTICES IN MENTAL HEALTH CARE IN THE UNITED STATES – U.S. NEWS AND WORLD REPORT
Although the present research aims at facilities for severe mental illness in the Houston area, we find it relevant to get an overview of some of the best practices in mental health throughout the United States. It provides a reference of what good facilities have to offer and what can be achieved in this field.
To build our list of excellent services over the Country, we considered two primary sources. The first is the list of referrals provided by the mental health facilities in the Houston area assessed for the research. On the questionnaires handed to their representatives, we asked about best practices nationwide.
The second is the U.S. News & World Report directory of best Psychiatric hospitals. The company is a web-based media business that publishes annual rankings and analysis, being especially known for its “Best Colleges” and “Best Hospitals” lists. The hospitals ranked in the ten first places of the current directory are “… recommended by at least 5% of the psychiatric specialists responding to U.S. News surveys in 2014, 2015 and 2016” (U.S. News & World Report, 2016).
Severe criticism can be made of the attempt to compare mental health facilities, which are so heterogeneous in their settings, goals, costs and specialties.
