Best Practice Guidelines in Relation to Medical Surgical Nursing
The Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) states that “since 1925 the RNAO has advocated for healthy public policy, promoted excellence in nursing practice, increased nurses’ contribution to shaping the health-care system, and influenced decisions that affect nurses and the public they serve.” One of the ways the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario has achieved these goals is by developing a highly appraised program which advises nurses on evidence-based strategies to implement in their practice of patient care through the Best Practice Guidelines (BPG). Such process is initiated by identification of a topic, specific purpose, and the investigation of said guideline (RNAO, n.d.). This methodology includes a comprehensive analysis of current literature to establish priorities through the evidence. Such evidence is then explored by an expert panel of health care professionals to determine clinical, organizational, educational, and system-level recommendations (RNAO, n.d.). The evidence is graded on both qualitative and quantitative values which would be examples of how the patient feels or the change in a patient’s blood pressure respectively. After these recommendations are solidified the process then proceeds to be revised and evaluated by experts relative to the guideline (RNAO, n.d.). After this thorough process, the guideline is finally published, however, the process is far from over. Every five years the guideline will be reviewed to ensure the content is still relevant to what current research is demonstrating (RNAO, n.d.). Nurses play a crucial role in the management of pain by incorporating screening techniques into their practice. Additionally the assessment for the presence or risk for pain is a task student nurses are capable of, and should be encouraged to participate in (RNAO 2013). Additionally comprehensive pain assessments are related to an increase in the satisfaction of pain management which is correlated to the patient experiencing a better sleep, lower levels of anxiety, increased physical mobilization and mood (Mackintosh, 2007; RNAO, 2013).
