For this Quarter, I viewed the Deerfield Honors Band Recital on the eleventh of this month. It was a great concert that featured many soloists and groups that played some jazz pieces and marches. I heard a lot of great music and I learned a lot at the recital.
The first piece I enjoyed was Fly Me to the Moon. It was performed by Zachary Klein on drums who was accompanied by Alexander Ambrose. It was written by Bart Howard in 1954 but was made famous by Frank Sinatra a decade later. Frank Sinatra was an incredibly talented singer and actor from the 1960s. The recording that Frank Sinatra made was closely associated with the Apollo missions to the moon. Buzz Aldrin brought a copy of it with him to the moon. It was the first song to be played in orbit around the moon and on the moon when Buzz Aldrin played it on a cassette player. The song also has been in the 2014 remake of Robocop and Sesame Street in 1998.

He used a different kind of drum stick for this piece called a brush. A brush drum stick there are many metal bristles on the end of it. Brush drum sticks are good to use to make a softer sound and are mainly used for Jazz. I have played with this type of drum stick while playing on my cousin’s drum set. These sticks were perfect for the piece as the pianist was playing the melody without making a single mistake. Zachary was in the background playing the slick beat flawlessly. Zachary brushed the stick on the snare drum to create more of a scratchy sound. One thing I noticed however was that they did not seem perfectly in rhythm. I believe that Alexander was rushing. Zachary brushed the stick on the snare drum to create more of a scratchy sound. I really liked the drum riff at the beginning of the

I think that this song was very different from the songs we listened to in class, which was kind of neat. There wasn’t a clear rhythm of sorts to this song. I felt like a lot of different things were going on and each instrument had their own parts going on. However, it all flowed together really well. The saxophone(s) and piano played most of the choruses, and each had their own little part of a solo.…

Very few famous performers nowadays can integrate showmanship with their music. In the 70’s a musical group by the name of Parliament took the music world by storm with their out of this world appearance and their own rendition of Funk music. Parliament was one of the key pieces in the development of funk music and modern music as well. They created what we know as P-Funk today that was a key element of the foundation of Hip-Hop. For my concert report I analyzed Parliament’s 1976…

The concert that I will be critiquing is the late Amy Winehouse, Live at Shepherds Bush Empire in London, England. On May 29th 2007, solo artist, Amy Winehouse performed along with her backing band, a soul group called The Dap-Kings. I chose to view this concert because Amy is my all-time favorite jazz/ soul singer. Amy performed songs from her masterpiece album "Back To Black" and a few songs from her debut album, "Frank".…

On October 20, 2015 I had the pleasure of watching the University Jazz Ensemble II at the University of Louisville in Comstock. I have now been to a handful of jazz performances and I would have to say that this is my favorite. In this jazz ensemble, Jerry stated this particular ensemble was full of music majors, jazz majors, music educators, and graduates. I like seeing jazz ensembles that are mixed up with young and old, male and female.…

Moreover, since it was a solo performance, there was no communication among performers. Even though I could not see the performer because he was hide behind the organ, I could feel that I was putting a lot of energy in this piece to make it dramtic. Just by the way he would hit the peddles it resound in the Hall. The musical composition I liked the least was Prélude et fugue en mi mineur composed by Johann Sebastian Bach.…

At the concert, I was a perspective listener. The perspective listener is a combination of all of the listener types. A perspective listener enjoys the sound of the music but is also critically aware of how it makes them feel and why and it also makes associations with the music whether it being from a feeling or a memory. Going to the concert I was listening with great concentration, trying to hear every aspect of the piece.…
