Before, the way I memorized things was to picture something about the word and it would stick in my mind forever. Later on, I found out the only way I could remember anything was to write it down over and over again. I also learned my walking was a little off. Whenever I stepped my foot would roll from the outside in. This is probably what causes me to sprain my ankles…
Classroom Culture I attended Gary A. Knox, which is an elementary school to observe a classroom on their culture. In their student handbook it says that the students are expected to be respectful, responsible, and safe to the rules. If they are to break the rules they will be held accountable for their behavior. They want their students to be trustworthy, loyal, honest, and have integrity.…
According to The Vark learning styles questionnaire the two learning styles that I learn best with best are aural and kinesthetic. Aural means I learn best when hearing the information spoken and by asking questions about the concept I am learning. The other way I learn best is being kinesthetic which means I use my five senses and hands on experiences to help me learn. The Aural side of me likes to remember stories, examples, and jokes, to be to relate them to the concept I am learning. I have found that I when attended class and really focus on what the instructor or professor is teaching I am able to grasp the concept that is being taught.…
The classroom setting is for, four-year-old preschool aged children. The idea behind the preschool comes from Piaget’s theory that children learn by a process of adaptation, assimilation, and then accommodation. During the first step, they interpret new stimulation in ways that fit with what they already know. As the new information assimilates, the existing knowledge modifies and creates a better match. Lastly, the child’s understanding gradually changes from the interaction with the environment.…
This week, my ah-ha moment kind of angers me. In my new third grade classroom there is a student who is very low on every academic level. She is 10 years old, does not grasp phonics, can not read but attempts to sound out every letter, and she can only COPY a 100's chart but still gets very confused if not guided. I have been in the classroom for about four days now and my heart is so sad for this child. I think all of her previous teachers have failed her because she should not be in third grade right now.…
I used different techniques to remember all of these. Mnemonics, flashcards, and writing the terms many times. I always did really well on these because of my preference of memorization. Another time memorization came in handy for me was when we were learning the skills for the CNA test. We were given a booklet my teacher referred to as the “CNA bible.”…
I am currently student teaching in a 4th grade classroom at Sunset Elementary under my master teach, Alissa Nakaji. Upon my first day, I instantly fell in love with the dynamics of the classroom. The classroom had colorful posters explaining rules, consequences, inspirational quotes, and a list of roles for each student (changed weekly). This classroom feels more like a community of students striving together to have an optimal learning experience instead of just one teacher demanding and controlling the students. It is very autonomous and the teacher is involved only when needed.…
As a diverse student with a variety of interests and passions, the liberal arts program and energetic community atmosphere at Bates draws me to its campus. I enjoy learning many different subjects and discovering the connections between them all. Recently, my Physics teacher and my Calculus teacher collaborated on a problem the class was assigned and I was able to see how both teachers concurred the same issue from different angles. As a student involved in many school sponsored service events, such as Wreaths Across America and National Honors Society, I am inspired to see that Bates also encourages students to be a part of the Lewiston community. I would be interested getting involved with the Root Cellar volunteers in the community.…
Why do students remember everything that is on television and forget what is taught in lecture? Students’ skills are best improved through practice, but before practice, observation is a key component to learning. For example, even if the students are given the steps on how to perform the return demonstration, they want to see the actual procedure to be more confident that they can accomplish it on their own. Students can use visual media as a way to retain concepts and ideas.…
Mrs. Bomer had a very well planned lesson; you can tell she put a lot of time in selecting this book for this particular class at this specific time in the school year for them. Mrs. Bomer definitely used some Fountas and Pinnell suggested guidelines for selecting texts for interactive read-aloud. Mrs. Bomer the text was appropriate to the age and the interests of the students, the text helps students understand how people have responsed to life’s challenges, and evaluated the text to be sure the ideas and concepts can be understood by her students. (Fountas and Pinnell, p. 234).…
My favorite 8th grade memory is when my friends and I all biked to dairy mart. There was at least eight of us biking towards dairy mart. We stopped by everyone’s house so we were all together while we were going on our trip. Something funny was that Tristan didn’t have a bike so he had to sit on the back of Angel’s bike.…
Remembering things can be easy for some and while for others they are born with short term memory in which create a problem for them. Some may remember to do simple tasks while others forget as if they never did it before. I have found certain strategies throughout my textbook that will help me with improving my memory so that I can study efficiently and remember things as well. Those strategies are pretty clear on what to do. We remember things based on importance and or relation that it may have to previous information that we have already stored in our memory.…
“Short-term lets you hold a restaurant's phone number in your mind as you dial the number, you rely on your short-term memory. This storage is capable of holding roughly seven items of information for approximately 15 to 20 seconds.” (Foster, 2011) Short-term memory is very restricted and needs to make room for all original knowledge coming in consistently. “Long-term is a more permanent storage, hoarding information over hours, days or years. This information can take the form of declarative memories, which include simple facts or specific episodes in your life, or procedural memories to do with skills, such as how to ride a bike.”…
Walk around the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus and you will find students who have ditched lectures and notecards to spend their time outside of the classroom. With over 40 service learning courses offered this fall, UW-Madison allows students an alternative way to learn and bring resources to the surrounding community. These classes also have shown to create a new learning environment that provides important experience and aids students’ mental health.…
A classroom’s community and environment is what allows students to either learn successfully or unsuccessfully. If the environment is not welcoming, safe, and encouraging a student’s basic needs will not be met and their academic success will suffer consequently. I aspire to create a classroom environment that exudes creativity, safety, equity, and community. In order to create a collaborative learning environment, as I desire to, I must also adhere to learning differences of students and the uniqueness of my students’ development patterns. The following paper will discuss my understanding of how different students progress, how I will address the range of learning preferences and cultures, as well as how I will use that knowledge to create a collaborative learning environment.…
