This year the Annual Literacy Festival was titled Strange Bedfellows and was mainly about Politics and Literature. This title was chosen to be the theme this year because of the new upcoming president that will be elected and all of the politics that are taking place right now. All of the participants this year were chosen based off of the fact that they all connect to “poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and have attempted to make sense and art out of political actualities” (Old Dominion University Libraries). The festival took place from Sunday September 25th to Thursday September 29th at different locations on campus. The event that I attended was held at the Baron and Ellie Gordon Art Galleries, I really enjoyed where the event took place because…

Education is important and extremely valued within American society, although students with disabilities have struggled with getting the opportunity to have the same fair, appropriate education as their nondisabled peers. In 1975, the Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EHA) was enacted and public schools began to provide accommodations for students with disabilities. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) replaced the EHA in 1990, and it was designed to place more focus on the individual’s needs. Disabled students have benefitted greatly from IDEA since it was enacted 26 years ago. IDEA has immensely changed the way students with disabilities receive an education.…

Universal design is a way to level the playing field for students with disability and enhance everyone’s educational experience and performance. Universally designed campuses and curricula, while not utopian, can result in more meaningful and full access for all (Ashmore & Kasnitz, 2014). Access is build in rather than by request. According to Burgstahler (2014), Ronald Mace, “an internationally recognized architect and educator”, first named the term universal design in the 1970s (Vance et al., 2014, p. 37). Mace defined the concept through the Center for Universal Design (CUD) at North Carolina State University as “the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation…

As I take a look back to the start of this course, I knew little to nothing about the background of this course. I had friends who previously took the course, and with their input, I was still lost. They told me, “you will roll around campus using a wheelchair for the first class session.” However, what they fell to mentioned that this course will change my outlook on life and inspire me to reevaluate my vocabulary. My perspective of people with a disability has changed drastically.…

Unlike other students in my class, the place where I did my service learning was a little bit different. What made it so different was that there was a lot more, at least I felt, elderly people as opposed to people with disabilities. Sure they may have been a few that if you went there you could maybe tell that they were disabled but honestly, after putting in so many years of visiting nursing homes with multiple groups, I couldn’t even tell if the younger people there were there for the program, or just hanging out with the elderly. As a side comment this could have been because one of the groups that I went with just happened to be a group of people with mental challenges, so that could have added to the confusion. Anyway, as I have said because of my past experiences I can’t really tell what’s what sometimes.…

For my field placement, I was at Merrillville High School. Merrillville High School educates over 2,000 students of which come from diverse backgrounds and have a variety of needs in order to succeed in the classroom. Mr. Hoffman, my cooperating teacher, is one of the mathematics educators who specifically teaches Algebra II and Pre-Calculus. This experience was the first time I had been in the classroom observing a male teacher and the first time I have been in a truly diverse setting. It was notably different being in a classroom run by a male versus the classrooms that I observed in were the teachers were females.…
