This is from Bertha’s point of view starting from page 297 (A) after it is revealed that Mr. Rochester in fact has a wife living in Thornfield Hall up to page 299. Also a flashback to page 286 (the ripping of the wedding veil)*Note: Bertha cannot physically speak and can only make sounds, so all the dialogue by her will be her thoughts*

I truly did. They thought I was not aware but I was. I heard Grace and Leah chattering about Rochester’s new bride to be. How it was no other than the governess that worked for him. I needed to warn her of the dangers of Edward and if she weds him she will be confined up in here just as I was. I would not fancy the life I have on anyone even my husband’s new mistress. I am the demon, yet he was the one who locked up his first wife and is not trying to marry a new one. He made sure they knew he was the so called victim in this situation. He then pointed to the governess and said “this is what I wished to have” (298) I glanced at the governess again; she was struggling to not make eye contact with me or Edward. Poor girl, if anyone is a victim, she sure is. Luckily, Edward constant speech about forgiveness and wanting to marry this governess hinted at the wedding did not in fact happen. She got out just in time. If only we were all that fortunate and wise.
Now my only desire was it would stay this way. I hoped that the governess would not buy into the words of Edward and forgive him. This is a man that did not deserve pity or forgiveness. He has only brought this upon himself. It is not that I desired unhappiness for Edward, but he is in no rightful situation to bring in new people into his life without taking care of his past. Even though I am his past but until he stops keeping me locked up I will continue to be his future.
