Bernward Doors Research Paper

The Bernward doors were created for a Hildesheim Cathedral in Germany and were made by Bishop Bernward. The Bernward doors are the two leaves that consist of the bronze doors. The bronze explains the religion of Christianity. The left side of the door depicts the book of Genesis, while the right side of the doors depicts specific scenes from the life of Christ. These doors are very idealized because they represent good character and correspond to a good idea. They also depict certain figures, such as Adam and Eve as icons throughout the doors. Deities are when artists communicate stories of religious figures or deities to help explain their importance. I think that the bronze doors fit into this category the most. I believe this because Bernward incorporated specific figures in certain scenes throughout the doors to help people better understand parts of the Old Testament and the New Testament. The second category, spiritual beings and ancestors, is referring to art that reflects the beliefs in the spirits of gods and ancestors. This category is beneficial in that it explains to you how important it is to understand the first scenes on the doors before you can understand the other ones. If a person did not know the different ancestors and gods you will not be able to understand the full meaning of the bronze doors. The third category is connecting with the gods; this category has to do with the communication between the gods. This is incorporated into specific scenes in the bronze doors. An example of this would be when God tried to communicate with Adam and Eve, who where depicted in the picture by linear outlines and stylized poses, about not eating the fruit and they failed to listen to him. The last category is sacred places, which refers to places that restore our soul. This is important is explaining the significance that the different places have on the pictures. An
