Bernstein's Relationship With A Mentor Analysis

As a part of my engagement assignment I decided to build a connection with a faculty mentor. After reading through the staff listing on the Arizona State website I decided that I wanted to sit down and talk with Professor Gregory Bernstein. I chose Professor Bernstein, because I read in his bio that he had written and sold several scripts. Becoming a writer for television and film is my goal, and the reason I chose to attend ASU, so I was interested to see what advice he could give me about the craft. When I met with Professor Bernstein we discussed how and why he became a writer, what it takes to make and sell a script, and films that we each enjoy.
After introducing myself to Professor Bernstein, and telling him a little bit about my background and why I requested the meeting, he answered my questions about why he became and writer and how I can get started. I first asked him why he …show more content…
Professor Bernstein explained that he was a fan of Billy Wilder movies, and especially Sunset Boulevard. He also recommended that I watch The Sting, which I have now added to my watchlist on IMDb. I told the professor that a couple of my favorite films are The Social Network and The Shawshank
Redemption. He agreed that both of these movies told excellent stories, and he even said that he was on the Harvard campus when Mark Zuckerberg crashed the campus servers with Facesmash.
When I was initially assigned this engagement task it was not something I was necessarily looking forward to. After meeting with Professor Bernstein I can honestly say that I am extremely glad this was apart of the THF 125 course, and that I decided to reach out to him. He seemed like a straightforward and sincere guy, and I could tell he was genuinely interested in meeting with and talking to me. I hope to have him as a mentor in the future, and because of this engagement assignment I am likely to go visit with him again in the near
