Bernie Sanders's Rhetorical Elements Of Ethos Pathos Logos

Bernie Sanders has goals to eliminate tuition for public colleges and universities, implement a single-payer healthcare system, overhaul campaign finance regulations and put in place major Wall Street regulations to prevent future financial crises. These are all seemingly impossible dreams to accomplish but, he may accomplish them by his proficiency in the rhetorical elements of ethos, logos, and pathos. According to BYU, ethos means, “the persuasive appeal of one’s character”. Throughout the debate, Sanders attempted to make it seem like he was a righteous man, who will make good, moral decisions, for the betterment of all people. What this essentially means is appealing to the audience through facts. Sanders logos throughout the debate was strong but, was weakened due to some incorrect facts. The strong parts of his logos was when he brought up some mind boggling stats. For example, he stated that “A male african baby has a 25% chance of going to jail”. He advocates that the court systems are corrupt, have racism in them, and that if he was president he would decrease those numbers. The fact above is so staggering that when voters hear he would plan to decrease those numbers it makes them want to vote for him. And that’s exactly what he wants. Another example of strong logos is when he said that “20% of Americans can’t afford antibiotics”. This fact backed up his believe that there should be free health care, which made his argument even stronger. The part where Sanders goes wrong though, is where he states a false fact. He stated the unemployment rate for African American youth is 50%, the actual rate of unemployment for African American youth is between 16% and 19%. This makes his argument seem weaker and can affect people’s opinion of his character. The third, and final rhetorical appeal he used, was

This advertisement supports pathos, ethos, and logos. For pathos, it first includes the picture of a baby which catches the readers eye and reminds them of the baby whose life will be affected by their decision. The second part of pathos includes words such as “plagues”, “diseases”, and “for generation”. It makes the reader realize the severity of their decision and how long the disease has been a problem. For ethos, it talks about being concerned about the side effect of immunizations and makes it sound like they also concerned about the side effects.…

Most gun owners want to do something about it but they don’t want to change the traditions that make up this nation, although in order to express God’s grace we have to change the tradition. This shows a good use of logos. Also the problems about racism are not coming near to ending so we have to keep talking about the problems in order to solve them.…

Bleh, locking down a clear understanding of ethos, pathos, and logos took a significant amount of time and research. Being able to apply this concept to a paper I found to be even more difficult especially in clarifying ethos and logos. In my mind, I over simplified the two concepts to ethos equaling credibility and logos to mean the accuracy of the information, but in my research, this was not always the case. In a basic Google search of rhetoric and web design, many sources stated that logos was the layout and ease of use of a website. The ethos, on the other hand, was how "professional" the website looked.…

There have been several deaths caused by the plaguing addiction of drugs and alcohol. Drug use is becoming a growing problem that needs to be contained and prevented with the help of an expansion of the organization LAPP (Licking County Alcoholism Prevention Program) branching out into its own center called EPLAPP, (Extensive Progression of Licking County Alcoholism Prevention Program). To cut back on the drug use and deaths in Licking County, EPLAPP will provide users and abusers with the resources they need to sober up, cutting back on the drug use rate which will cut back the number of deaths. With the creation of EPLAPP, the services being provided will be more in depth and help some with more employees/volunteers to help addicts, along with other resources, such as financial aid, counseling, and sober living facilities. On March 14th of 2016 presidential candidate, Bernie Sanders conducted a rally at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago. Like most presidential race speeches Sanders tried to persuade the audience to believe in his opinions and get them to vote for him. Coming into this speech Sanders was down in support compared to his competitor Hillary Clinton but, as said before, he was and is still trying to persuade people to support his side. During the time of the speech, I was not keeping up with politics and really had no intention of trying to get involved. According to Aristotle, logos is an appeal to logic, and is a way of persuading an audience by reason. Obama goes back and states facts, statistics and historical events where he had been successful as president. Obama does this to persuade the audience to continue his successes and to fight equal rights. He does this by listing several statistics on inequality, for example, “ Health care costs are rising at the slowest rate in 50 years. And I’ve said, and I mean it, anyone can put together a plan that is demonstrably better than the improvements we’ve made to our health care system, that covers as many people at less cost, I will publicly support it.”…

When comparing the commencement speech given by Steve Jobs at Stanford University in 2005 to the commencement speech given by Barak Obama at Wesleyan University in 2008, one can argue that Steve Jobs’ address has a stronger use of the rhetorical situation and the rhetorical appeals. Jobs’ ability to combine ethos, pathos and purpose proves his credibility, builds a relationship with the audience, and helps students believe in their intuitions. In his 2005 commencement address to Stanford University, Steve Jobs incorporates ethos to prove his credibility to his audience. He begins by admitting that “[he] never graduated from college” (1).…
