After serving four terms he chose not to seek reelection in 1989 but instead teach political science at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government that year and at Hamilton College in 1991. Also in 1988 he decided to run for U.S. Senate with 38% of the votes. Two years later ran again for the seat and won. He had now become the first independent to be elected for US house of representatives in 40 years. He did a lot of amazing work in the 14 years of being one of the House of Representatives to then later run for U.S senate. On April 21, 2006 he defeated businessman Rich Tarrant and now had a chair in the U.S senate. As one of the first memorable thing he did was deliver a eight hour long filibuster against the extension of Bush era tax cuts for the wealthy.He also fought for expanding the voting right and went against the Supreme Court to remove the landmark Voting Rights Act. Since Bernie is also a member of the U.S Senate Committee on Environmental & Public Works and the Energy & Natural Resources Committee he is driven by his sense of protecting the environment.
