Everyone has heard of presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Whether you see her on a debate or on Fox News, you probably have heard a lot about her. On the other hand, not everyday do we hear about her fellow Democrat running, Bernie Sanders. What distinguishes Sanders from all other candidates is that he refuses to accept large campaign contributions from large corporations. This allows him to remain uninfluenced by corporate interests. Other candidates may find it difficult to ignore requests for special treatment when they have accepted large sums of money that helped to get them elected. He mainly focuses on socialism and environmental issues, but has strong views on all other issues as well. Bernie believes that everyone, no matter how much money they have, should pay their fair share of taxes. He wants to tax Wall Street speculators who caused millions their jobs, homes, and life savings. Although he doesn’t favor the flat tax, he doesn’t completely oppose it. “Flatter taxes benefit the wealthy more than the lower and middle class. “Our intelligence and law enforcement agencies must have the tools needed to protect us, but there must be legal oversight and it must be done in a way that does not sacrifice our basic freedoms.” Sanders also believes that we have the strongest military in the world, so we should only use it when completely necessary.
Senator Sanders does not favor the National Security Agency. The NSA is a surveillance program that monitors citizens’ phone activity. He plans to completely shut down the company, adding, “We can (protect the country from terrorism) without living in an Orwellian world where the government and private corporations know every telephone call that we make, every website we visit, everyplace we go.”
When it comes to gun rights, Bernie Sanders has mixed feelings. He strongly believes in the basic Constitutional right to bear arms. He does not believe gun ownership should be restricted in our country. Instead, he specifically wants to strengthen and better enforce the instant background check system; close the gun-show loophole; make 'straw man' purchases a federal crime; ban semi-automatic assault weapons which are designed strictly for killing human beings; and work to fix our broken mental health
