Bernie Sanders Influence On Social Issues

The officer holder I chose to research was Bernie Sanders. I chose him because I actually have no knowledge on him or his views. After doing some researching, I discovered that I do in fact agree with some of his ideas and views on some issues in America. Three issues of many issues that I find important are foreign policy, the economy( income equality) and healthcare. These topics are also topics that I agree with Senator Sanders on. Along with many of Americans, Sanders was against the war in Iraq which was very costly and until this day America suffers from. According to Mullany ( 2015) , "Sanders says, the fight against the Islamic Sate should be undertaken by countries like Saudi Arabia, which borders Iraq and has the financial and military …show more content…
My personal thoughts are the economy is made for the rich to get richer and the poor to stay below the rich. I concur that Americans living in poverty or are just making a living should have a better chance to financial stability as the rich. Bernie Sanders stands for just that. He points of the flaws that Congress turn a blind eye to. Sanders stated, " While the middle class continues to disappear the wealthiest in this country and the largest corporations are doing phenomenally well" (Washington Post, 2015). Another reason why I chose Sanders would be the authenticity of his views on income equality. According to Joseph(2015), Sanders stated, " This great nation and its government belong to all of the people. and not to a handful of billionaires ( para.3). Along with Sanders views, I believe that the taxes of the wealthy and poor should be different. " To the billionaire class, I say that your greed has got to end" ( Joseph, 2015, para.6). Lastly on this issue, Sanders , "called for higher taxes on the wealthy, a $15 national minimum wage, a 1 trillion federal jobs and infrastructure program, free universal college education and universal healthcare. Also stated , " his humble upbringing in Brooklyn taught him what lack of money means to a family" ( Joseph, 2015, …show more content…
Along with Sanders, I believe people of varying financial situations should have access to healthcare. Regardless of how much money you make, healthcare should be provided. To promote primary healthcare, "Sanders secured $12.5 billion in the Affordable Care Act to increase the number of Federally Qualified Health Centers across the country and to deploy more doctors, dentists, and other healthcare professional in underserved areas through the Nat'l Health Service Corps. Expanding the number of places where people can access care and increasing the number of health care providers across the country significantly increases patients..access to affordable primary medical, dental, and mental healthcare as well as low-cost prescription drugs" (Primary healthcare, para.2). Overall, three issues I look for when viewing candidates are foreign policy, the economy and healthcare. Many of the views of Bernie Sanders I found interesting and I agreed with him. "Today, with you support and the support of millions of people throughout this country, we begin a political revolution to transform our country economically, politcally, socially, and environmentally (Joseph, 2015, para.2). Regarding foreign policy he believes force should be used when needed. He also recognizes the clear gap in the economy between the rich and the poor, and also "promotes Medicare-for-all-single-payer health care system" (Mullany, 2015,

His gun-policy, which was more conservative than most democrats would like is a prime example of his reasoning. He explains the validity of both thorough background checks and mental health issues that can be applicable to gun violence. His connection to mental healthcare also bolsters another one of his policies, universal healthcare. But a very noticeable aspect to his plan that many other candidates lack is the inclusion of the NRA in the reform. If Bernie includes the NRA a deal will likely be stuck that garners more support from either side than other deals would.…

Sanders doesn’t want to get involved in another war with Iraq. We should be supportive, but doesn’t support American group troops in Syria. He believed that the worst decision of American history was to be involved in the Iraq. Sanders thinks that a no-fly zone in Syria is dangerous. He also believes that when our country or allies are in trouble, we should discuss the issue, not act on it with war so quickly.…

For example, a free education and health care is great but how he plans to pay for it is the problem. Their idea for revolutionizing the government is to become a democracy for all citizens. This includes engaging the people’s voices and making millions activated with today’s politics. Sanders also promises a different look to health care, paid maternity leave, and free tuition for public colleges. Sanders is running to be president, to lead, for he is a man of the people, not the businesses. This is clear by looking at the difference between the two’s speeches. When addressing possible future presidency, Mrs. Clinton has continually said, “When I win this election...” On the other hand, Mr. Sanders has consistently stood by, “When we win this election,” for he is running with the populace, not for the…

To him health programs/ initiatives and lowering prescription costs are key components of healthcare. As of right now Americans pay the most for prescriptions in the world and his six step plan goes as follows: Negotiate a better deal, import prescriptions from Canada, more discounts for low income seniors, bring back generic drugs, harder penalties for frauds, and lastly transparency when it comes to drug pricing and costs. In negotiating a better deal Sanders believes that Medicare should negotiate better prices with drug companies (currently banned right now). By importing drugs from Canada, Americans should not have to pay more than it neighbor for the exact same thing and it cuts on spending.…

Albert Einstein once said "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results". Throughout the years the people of the United States have Seen our Presidents repeat every action of the one before them, hoping something will change. I believe that in today's climate the Republicans are anything but conservative and Democrats are conservative, that Bernie Sanders is a conservative because he proposes less spending, smarter spending, with less tax dollars being spent on all the wrong things and this is why I’m voting for him. Bernie is conservative on healthcare. Currently this country spends more on healthcare than any other country in the world without even guaranteeing it. This is a result of tax dollars competing to provide care with private health insurance. Private health insurance offers no oversight and the prices keep skyrocketing to pay off investors with very little of the actual cost paid going to real health providers like nurses, technicians, and doctors.…

Throughout Bernie Sanders' Campaign video, he is trying to put across that family and education are a big part of his life. He thinks that the country should be ready for when it's time for the next generation to be running for Presidential elections. He is telling a story during the video, how he wasn't raised in a house that had a lot of money, he knows what life is like for the poor. And that is why he wants to change that there are starving families in America because parents don't have jobs to support their families. He is going to do this by creating more jobs with decent paying rates, so that everybody has the chance to live and be healthy.…

But also say that he is known for being the underdog, recalling that he won his first office by only 12 votes (Mead). His followers are very vocal compared to other campaigns, and this may be what gives him this slight upper hand. According to Sanders himself, if he were to win the Democratic candidacy and go on to win the Presidency, America would go through at least twelve major changes. He calls these things Bernie’s 12 steps forward. The steps forward are as listed: rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure, reversing climate change, creating worker co-ops, growing in the trade union movement, the raising of minimum wage to $15, pay equity for women ( or equal pay for equal work), trade policies that benefit American workers, affordable college education for everyone, the taking down of Wall Street, health care as a right for everyone, the protection of the most vulnerable of Americans (that being infant children and senior citizens), and lastly real tax reform (“12 Steps Forward”).…

    Gilded Age Inequality

Robert Reich, former Secretary of Labor and presenter of the documentary Inequality for All, once said “The faith that anyone could move from rags to riches - with enough guts and gumption, hard work and nose to the grindstone - was once at the core of the American Dream. Unfortunately today we know that this is no longer the case in the United States. The gap between the rich and the poor continues to increase as the rich get richer and the poor can’t get out of poverty. Contrary to popular belief this is not due to lack of hard work but due to a lack of opportunity and this has become a huge problem for the United States. Although we can’t have every person in this country be wealthy due to the system of capitalism, it is possible to decrease…
