In light of the recent presidential election, one candidate whose ideals and beliefs are so revolutionary yet so practical has taken America by storm and given many Democrats hope for the future. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders’ recent success in the 2016 Presidential race represents a surge of anti-establishment, leftist Progressivism in our country and offers a realistic alternative to Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton. He is the only Democratic Candidate whose campaign is not funded by a Super PAC. He believes the campaign financing system in this country is corrupt as politicians cater not to public interest but to the interests of the billionaires funding their campaigns. In fact, over 750,000 Americans have donated to his campaign. The average contribution is $30. He has more small donors than any Presidential Candidate in all of American history. Hillary Clinton, in contrast, has only 17% of her donations at under $200. what % of Bernies donors are under $200? Her main source of funds comes from large corporations such as Time Warner and Bank of America. A goal of his is to increase taxes on the wealthiest 1% of Americans. Sanders believes that the middle class is being destroyed in this country and has for decades preached about the grossly disproportionate distribution of income. Specifically, he wants to increase taxes on those in the "top income bracket" of over $400,000 per year. In a recent campaign speech, he cried: "We need real tax reform which makes the rich and profitable corporations begin to pay their fair share of taxes. We need a tax system which is fair and progressive. Children should not go hungry in this country while profitable corporations and the wealthy avoid their tax responsibilities by stashing their money in the Cayman Islands." Another economic policy of his is to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour. In the aforementioned speech, he gave his thoughts on a higher minimum wage."American workers deserve a decent wage. The middle class is disappearing. We have millions of working people living in poverty and 99 percent of all new income is going to the top one percent. That is not what America is supposed to be about". In short, he believes that If you work 40 hours a week, you should make enough to take care of your kids and your family.
