Bernice Joseph was an influential woman, not just to Alice Crow, but also to Native people all over the nation. Alice Crow described Bernice as “…a thoughtful, smiling, grounded, faithful lover and champion of our People.” Alice and Bernice spent an enormous amount of time with each other either dancing, eating, or slurping on some hot tea while conversing about life. Alice wrote about Bernice and how she inspired her to be the woman she is today. About 12 years later, Alice read a piece that honored Bernice at the Alaska Native Studies Conference and several other places and conferences. Peoples’ reactions to Alice’s writing warmed her heart.
