Georg Friedrich Bernhard Riemann was a German mathematician who made huge contributions to the field of mathematics, and more specifically calculus. Riemann was born on September 17, 1826 in Breselenz, Germany. His father, Friedrich Bernhard Riemann, was a poor pastor, and his mother, Charlotte Ebell, died before her children had reached adulthood. Growing up, Riemann showed exceptional skill with mathematics, such as his abilities in calculation. In fact, in 1840, Riemann went to live with his grandmother and finally started to attend middle school. Shortly after, in the year of 1842, he attended high school at the Johanneum Lüneburg. In high school, Riemann studied the Bible intensively, but he also thoroughly enjoyed mathematics as well. Riemann constantly surprised his teachers with his ability to perform complicated mathematical operations, in which he often knew more than his teachers. In 1846, at the age of 19, he started studying philology and Christian theology in order to become a pastor and help with his family's finances. …show more content…
However, once he got there he began learning mathematics from Gauss. Gauss saw his skill in mathematics and persuaded Riemann to give up his theological work to enter the mathematical field. Riemann then transferred to the University of Berlin in 1847. He stayed in Berlin for two years and returned to Göttingen in 1849. Thirteen years after returning, in 1862, he married Elise Koch and had a daughter. Sadly on July 20, 1866, Bernhard Riemann died of tuberculosis in Selasca,
